Sung mostly in the antique French of southwest Louisiana, Cajun music draws on the rich and isolated culture of French Canadians who were deported from New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia because the French were advancing on the English settlers. After they got to Louisiana, they were introduced to Afro-American culture, and the mélange known as Cajun music was born.
